Safety rules for using a rented bike and personal safety
Before Departure:
- Bike Check:
- Check the condition of the brakes (front and rear).
- Ensure the tires are properly inflated and free of damage.
- Make sure the chain and gears (if present) are functioning correctly.
- Verify that the lights (white front and red rear) are working
- Saddle Adjustment:
- Set the saddle at the correct height so that your legs are slightly bent when the pedal is at its lowest point.
- Wear a Helmet:
- Requirement: In Italy, helmets are not mandatory for adults but are strongly recommended. For minors, they may be required in some regions.
- Essential Protection: Reduces the risk of head injuries in case of an accident.
- Adjustment: Ensure the helmet is securely fastened and centered on your head, with the straps forming a “Y” under your ears and the chin strap properly adjusted.
While Riding
- Follow Traffic Rules:
- Use bike lanes when available and always ride on the right side of the road.
- Obey Traffic Signals: Respect traffic lights, road signs, and right-of-way rules.
- Avoid Sidewalks, do not ride on sidewalks unless it is explicitly allowed.
- Maintain Control:
- Keep both hands on the handlebars, except when signaling a turn.
- Signal Your Maneuvers:
- Use your arm to indicate when you want to turn.
- Avoid Distractions:
- Do not use earphones or phones while riding.
- Keep a Safe Distance:
- Maintain a safe distance from vehicles, pedestrians, and other bikes to avoid accidents.
Personal Safety
- Appropriate Clothing:
- Wear clothes that won’t get caught in the bike (e.g., tight pants or those with elastic bands).
- Use reflective vests or bright-colored clothing, especially in the evening or in low-visibility conditions.
- Visibility and Lighting:
- Turn on the lights (white front and red rear) at dusk or in low-light conditions.
- Hydration:
- Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated, especially on long rides or hot days.
Responsible Behavior
- Do Not Ride Under the Influence:
- The use of alcohol or substances that impair reflexes is dangerous and prohibited.
- Do Not Carry Passengers:
- Rented bikes are designed for one person unless they are tandems or specific models
- Park Safely:
- Use the provided lock to secure the bike in authorized areas.
- Avoid blocking sidewalks, entrances, or other public spaces.
In Case of Emergency
- Useful Numbers:
- Keep the emergency number (112) in mind to report accidents or request help.
- Contact the rental provider immediately in case of breakdowns or bike issues.
- In Case of an Accident:
- Ensure your safety and that of others, then call emergency services if needed.
- Report any damage to the bike to the rental provider to avoid liability.
